Councillor Liz Barrett was appointed to the Commission in 2022 as Perth & Kinross Council’s Opposition Representative, due to her recognised passion for environmental issues.
Initially qualified as a solicitor and Chartered Accountant, Liz worked in the City of London, and ran her own consultancy business for over 20 years, providing advice on energy deregulation and business analysis and programme management services in the Scottish electricity sector.
Before being elected as a Scottish Liberal Democrat Councillor in 2020, Liz set up, and still volunteers with, Moncreiffe Community Fridge, to help reduce food waste and tackle food poverty. As a local Litter Champion, Liz helps organise litterpickers in Perth City South. She uses her e-bike as much as she can when out and about in Perth and on Council business, and always ready to get her hands dirty (or more, see picture!) when supporting community groups on activities like planting trees and pond clearing.
Liz says “We can all make a difference, working together and campaigning together for the changes we need to get to net zero carbon in Perth and Kinross. We can buy local, supporting local businesses, reducing travel and transport costs, and reducing waste from stuff bought online. We can share transport, grow more food, cut food waste, buy less plastic (or just buy less!) and choose sustainable travel and clothes where we can. Most of all, we can spread the word that we can tackle the climate and nature challenges together.”
